Backpackers Guide to Darwin

If youre backpacking round Australia youre sure to land in Darwin.

Darwin is a multicultural and laid back city on the north coast of Australia. The city was called Palmerston until it changed to Darwin in 1911.

Most of the hostels in Darwin are situated on the main street or very close to it. The price range is about the same compared to other places in Australia.

The main street hosts a shopping mall and a wide range of different dining options. As the city has these days become known as a backpacker location also, the activity options have become more comprehensive as well.

Darwin can be soaringly hot in the summer months, and the humidity can make it feel sometimes almost unbearable. Remember to drink a lot of water and to slap on the sunblock if spending a long time in the sun.

Darwin is also pretty close (171km) to one of the greatest national parks in the world, Kakadu. Almost 5 million acres, the massive park is located within the Alligator Rivers of Northern Territory. If you visit Darwin, it is highly recommended that you would spend some time visiting Kakadu, although the tickets can be a bit on the expensive side depending on the season.

Darwin has its own airport, and is also serviced by some bus operators (Greyhound for example).
