John Farnham, aka Johnny, Farnsy, Whispering Jack and The Voice

John Peter Farnham was born on the 1st July 1949 in England and moved to Melbourne at the age of 10 and has lived here ever since. He took a break from a plumbing apprenticeship in order to pursue a music career which has seen him become one of Australia's best-loved performers with a career spanning over 40 years.

In 1967, Sadie (The Cleaning Lady) was his first hit which topped the Australian charts for six-weeks running. He was the King of Moomba (1972) at the ripe age of 22, appearing on television and many other media appearances from stage to screen.

He has enjoyed much success and many changes. His music style changed to rock when he became the lead singer of Melbourne's Little River Band (1982-85). He then began a solo career, recording the incredible Whispering Jack which held the number one spot on the ARIA album charts for a record 25 weeks.

Long-time manager Glen Wheatley is greatly responsible for making Farnsy a household name. He mortgaged his house in order to pay for Farnham's 1986 'comeback' album Whispering Jack. His strong determination and high risk endeavours re-established Farnham as an Australian singing sensation and biggest selling album of all time in Australia.

Farnham has performed with the likes of Aussie icons Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow in The Main Event; Kate Ceberano, James Reyne and Human Nature in I Can't Believe He's 50 Tour; and most importantly supporting the Aussie troops in Dili in the Tour of Duty concert with Kylie Minogue and a string of other musicians.

The Last Time tour was just that, Farnham's last major concert which ended in 2003 with a standing ovation that lasted more than 10 minutes, and broadcast into millions of homes nationally.

Since releasing his greatest hits album One Voice, Farnham was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. He has since teamed up with the likes of music heavyweight Tom Jones (2005) and Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks performing a series of live shows.

Johnny Farnham is the only Australian artist to have a number one record over five consecutive decades.

Who is Whispering Jack?

John was mistakingly introduced as Jack Phantom at a club in the US which amused him so much started using the name Whispering Jack Phantom after the Pot Black commentator 'Whispering' Ted Lowe.

My sister adored John Farnham. She had all his albums and saw him perform many times. We'll always love him for making Wendy happy.

As a footnote, we've seen him live countless times over the years including 3 special ocassions: at his wedding (well, we drove past as he was coming out of the church). Handshake with him on a London street one evening on our way to see the Fabulous Singlets. Live at the Village Green during his HELP tour.. amazing. John, you rock!
